SOUTHERN
WOOD PIEDMONT (SWP) FOOT NAILS
Southern Wood Piedmont
Company made, among other things, nails that were to mark railroad ties
according to their length in excess of the normal eight (8) feet. These
ties were used when a longer tie was required for creating a siding,
spur, switches, etc. These particular nails were used by the Seaboard
Air Line and perhaps other railroads. The Union Pacific Railroad also
used Foot/Switch nails but they are quite different. I have another page
for those.
The pictures here show
the nails in my collection at this time and do not necessarily represent
all the types that were made. I am still looking for additional sizes
and variants. The purpose of this display is to acquaint anyone
interested to the differences found and to hopefully generate some
exchange of information towards the goal of documenting, for posterity,
the variations in these particular nails.
Look closely and you
will see that while the numbers are shaped the same, the size, shape and
thickness of the heads and location of the numbers on the heads can
vary, sometimes quite a bit. The same can be said about the shanks.
While they are all quite short the anchor marks can be quite different.
Note where the "T" is in relationship to the top anchor and
the spacing, size, thickness of the anchors. Also, the size and
thickness of the "T" is noticeably different on some and on
some types the "T" is almost non-existent.
