The California Glass Insulator Company was established on March 27, 1912 by Robert Trist in Long Beach, Calif. The reason for locating the plant in this location was because of an ample supply of adequate silica sand, the main ingredient for making glass. |
| The C.G.I.Co. embossed insulators are found only in the CD 102 Pony shape and have been found in a limited range of colors. Although the colors are few, the differences are subtle yet attractive. Most of the colors are pastels with Sun Colored Amethyst being the most prevalent followed by Smoke and then shades of Green. Any other shades are uncommon and quite desired by collectors such as myself. |

Of particular interest to collectors are the Two Tone variety. I have two and, as can be seen in these pictures, the two tone coloration is very difficult to capture, even when viewed by the human eye. It has been found that some form of back lighting is best. The pictures shown here are an attempt to demonstrate the subtle differences and hopefully give the viewer a better appreciation of their beauty. |
| The California Glass Works, as it was known after 1914, did produce other styles of insulators including all of the ones embossed simply CALIFORNIA and my favorite, the CD 178s with Santa Ana included on the skirt. You will find the CD 178s featured on another page within this site. The picture above shows the green variants I have while on the right are the two tones & purples in my collection. |
