Water

All wildlife need water for drinking and bathing even in the winter.
Our major source of water comes from two man made ponds.  Scattered throughout the yard are birdbaths, both at ground level and raised for protection from predators.

Big pond, summer time

Little Birdie pond, summer

The big pond is about four feet deep and not only provides water for drinking and bathing but also cover and reproductive areas for frogs and insects. The small birdie pond is a favorite with the birds. It is shut down during the snowy winter months.  The larger pond runs everyday all year long providing water during the winter.

Shelter or Cover

Many of the plants that offer food also offer protective cover from predators and increment weather.  Densely branched shrubs, brush piles, rocks, trees and water all provide cover for wildlife. The ideal habitat will contain a variety of plants ranging in size and density.

Finch on the lookout in the birch tree. Spent flowers offer cover and food.
Even though this tree has lost it's leaves for winter, it makes a good lookout for predators. Don't be anxious to remove those spent summer flowers.  They provide cover and seeds during the long winter months.
Evergreen trees provide cover and food. Looking north, lawn surrounded by shrubs and flowers.
Evergreens are a must in a habitat.  They provide dense cover, food and a place to raise young.  Lawns should be kept small and surrounded by sheltering bushes, native grasses and plants.

A pile of rocks provide cover for many animal species. Water and water plants provide cover for small fish, frogs and insects.
